Install Logitech Quickcam E 3500 Plus on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
Today I bought new webcam, Logitech Quickcam E3500 Plus, which according to this resource, it’s works out of the box on Skype. Without installing any drivers, I start test it on Camorama, unfortunately, it won’t work, the message showing that my webcam isn’t attached yet, the fact is I already attach it to my computer.

Then I tested on Ekiga, Skype and Kopete, it’s all works like charm. Here is the screenshot:

Then, I try searching for webcam manager application. I try many software but the most favorite one for me is wxcam. Why wxcam? Because this application has a lot of features and the recording tools works perfectly. You can download this application here.
Here are wxcam screenshot:

I have gone and bought a Logitech E 3500, because of the positive reports about it in Ubuntu linux. My wife and I both have family far away and we use skype to keep in contact.
It is unfortunate that some companies insist on only supporting Windows (like Logitech), but at least it seems Logitech is offering assistance to the linux webcam driver programmers. I must add that this assistance is not good enough though and any hardware I buy I make linux support the priority as that is what I choose to use! The only reason I bought this webcam is that is already has open-source support and I couldn’t find another available webcam with maker support.
By the way, if anybody is reading this that likes using Linux (and even if you dont use it but want to help): Please make a point of asking salespeople in computer shops about hardware supported for linux, send mail to hardware manufacturers asking which of their products is supported for linux! This is the only way to wake them up, since many users of linux simply buy hardware and then use it in linux…These manufacturers think there is no market in linux, because hardly anybody is telling them they are using the products in linux….Demand Support! It won’t be hard for them to deliver if they choose to!
Could you tell me if the integrated microphone works as well? Cheers!
@ Revan Benade:
Thanks for the suggestion.
@ Johannes Wilms:
