Skype Problem with Audio Playback - Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex

Sponsored Links

After writing about shutdown problem in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10, now I found another problem with my Skype. I have Logitech Quickcam E 3500 installed, and previously there is no problem with Ubuntu Hardy Heron. The problem comes from the microphone, everytime I try to call someone or Skype call test, there is a message “Problem with Audio Playback“.

Then, I found a solutions for my problem, execute all of this command on your terminal, here we go:

  • killall pulseaudio
  • sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
  • sudo apt-get install esound
  • sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio

I already done that and the problem still there.

    @marcela
Actually the last command is optional, do you already check your sound? try reboot your system and try the skype again.

actually, when I run the first command I got the following response:
    pulseaudio: no process killed
Then I run the second and got the following:
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
    pulseaudio
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 1327kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y
(Reading database … 105036 files and directories currently installed.)
    Removing pulseaudio …
    Processing triggers for man-db …

    And for the third command:
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
esound is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I restarted the computer (if that is what reboot your system mean), but I still have the same problem with skype.

    thank you.

    after:

    killall pulseaudio
    sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
    sudo apt-get install esound

when I reboot and try to login in my session I get an error message
Then I login in failfree session or something like that in “options”
    and reinstall pulseaudio with:

    sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

It solved the problem for me. Hope is useful.

    First of all
    1) When are we going to get a proper Skype package for Ubuntu 8.10?
    and then
    2) How should I install skype for my 8.10 now?
    +
    3) How do I get the sound working?

What I have done is downloading older version and istalling it with sudo dpkg -i *.deb. Now, this gets skype installed (since apt-get install does not work [i get an error message, something that can’t write to /etc/dbus-1/system.d/skype.con or something] -the problem seems to be in skype-common package) and it worked for me for a while. Until today. Yesterday I was still able to call my friend and talk to her but today nothing works. I just don’t see the reason since everything is as it was yesterday. First, skype announced that it has a problem with audio device (and mic). I followed the advices here -> I got the audio back BUT mic did not work. I have tried changing different settings with little help: sometimes certain settings bring back the sound (no mic though) and sometimes those same settings will make the sound disappear.
I have now unistalled skype and pondering what to do next. This leads me back to point nro 1). I just don’t know if I have enough energy to try to install skype back since it seems to be dead meat now. If anyone has any suggestions/knowledge on good skype package on Intrepid, I’d be much obliged. HOPEFULLY they’ll make a working copy sometime soon.

  16. arcticmagnolia Said,

I did manage to find a version that did not cause any errors while installing (http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-ubuntu) but the same problem remains…
I can get sounds back but no mic + after first Skype Test Call the software jams and I’m not able to make second Test Call. *Sweet*

  17. admin Said,

    November 29, 2008 @ 8:09 am

    Hi arcticmagnolia…
Thank you for the questions. Have you tried Medibuntu repositories? It’s not default repository for Intrepid Ibex, but you can add easily, go to this site:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Adding%20the%20Repositories
After that, you can try installing Skype by typing
    sudo apt-get install skype
This is what I’ve done with my Skype + Ubuntu
    Hope this help.
    Thank you

    Hi,

Could you please clarify by what you mean by ” now I can solve Skype problem on Interpid Ibex”…the command line instructions suggested went through, but after reboot skype still gives playback error (at least the “test sound” works now!)

    Thanks in advance!

  25. krychek Said,

    December 7, 2008 @ 4:51 pm

I had the same problem, I ran killall pulseaudio. After that skype started to work, but nothing else worked. I rebooted and everything is working now. I didn’t have to remove pulseaudio.

  26. IvanGarcia Said,

    December 7, 2008 @ 8:56 pm

More precisely, the first three commands were executed, but the last command “sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio” did not execute, since there was nothing to remove. After reboot, I selected “defaults” for the options in Sound Devices in Skype and was finally able to Not get a “playback error”. Remaining Problems:

    - during test call, no recording is heard… i.e. my Logitech microphone still does not work

    - In fact, only selecting all “default” from the Sound Devices options gets the Test Call to go through without errors (eg playback error).

    - I have Alsa, Intel, and Realtex options for audio in Ubunto, the default is the Intel option but again, when I try any of the ten or so intel options in the skype Audio Devices options, I get audio playback error… So in trying some of the 3! * 10! permutations, still no success with microphone.

    - upon attempting to Test my Logitech quickcam from Video preferences, a scrambled test scream appears for 1sec and then Skype automatically shuts down

    - suggestions? is there something similar to skype but better for Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex??

  27. IvanGarcia Said,

    December 8, 2008 @ 10:02 pm

I finally was able to get my incoming and outgoing sound to work:

on master volume i selected: mic, line-in, and video to appear as options and turned their volume all the way up. i also made sure i selected “Mic 1″ (im using an external logitech usb hook up mic)

Then from skype options, in the Sound Devices, i selected:

    Sound in: AK 5370 (hw:default,0)
    Sound out: Default
    Ringing: Default

upon which my Test Call finally worked (eg i could hear my recording)

Hopefully this solution works for others, too.

Current problem: upon testing my logitech quickcam, skype shuts down…upon Starting My Video during calls, all i can see is a scrambled screen. Suggestions?

PS: i played around Lots with the Ubuntu audio settings under Preferences, for example, enabling line-in and mic capture, etc etc, all while skype was up. After skype mic was working, i closed the volume options, re-opened them only to find that many of my changes had not been effected, but no matter so long as skype works!

    @ Chris, Kathia, Ed, Krychek
It’s my pleasure to help you all…
    @ IvanGarcia
Yes, Ivan, what should we do basically is finding the right setup on our sound card (System > Preferences > Sound or setting on Volume Manager and the last thing is Audio setting on Skype itself.

I tried killall pulseaudio, but response saying no process killed, so I tried sudo killall pulseaudio. Seemed to work, then followed next instructions, but when I got to the last line, response given that file or directory not found. After I rebooted, I was unable to login. Error message:
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup…
Setting IM through im-switch for locale = en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/Xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11
Couldn’t exec /usr/bin/pulse-session: No such file or directory.

The only way I could get login was in safe mode.

Please help? I don’t want to have to reinstall OS.

  31. Donavan Said,

    December 12, 2008 @ 12:01 am

I figured out what I did wrong. I had a typo and didn’t remove this file correctly -> sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio. Did that so able to login correctly again.

Start Skype and now can complete test call, which I couldnt do before. However, after recording message, Skype does not play it back at all.

I tested my mic in Volume Control and it works fine.

    Any ideas?

I’m also using Intrepid and followed the steps in this wiki to get it to work: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype

Like Donovan suggested, I had to rightclick the speaker button in the upper right corner in GNOME (the desktop) and had to enable ‘Capture’ and ‘Mic boost’ and turn up the volume on both until I could hear myself in Skype.

Bloody hell! 300 million people are using Skype, so why the fsck is the mic disabled by default? I don’t get it

    Hello friends,

after messing with commands and stuff around to try to
solve the famous skype echo, I finally solved this pain in the ass!!
    for intrepid ibex ubuntu.

If you follow this step by step your skype should work, at least I garantee that you will learn something.

so first of all don’t use the commands to remove any package
from your ubuntu specially pulseaudio, is useless and you will have an other pain in the ass trying to find what package to install:

    1) for the audio playback echo (when trying to make a call),

-go to the small skype logo located in the bottom left corner
when you are loged in skype-> go to options-> sound devices

    - change all default options to “pulse”.

Now you should be able to make a call test without the message
‘audio playback problem’ or stuff like that.

And you will have the next typical echo that your microphone
    will not be working.

    2) for the microphone echo (im using a headset):

-go to the upper panel in your window where is all the application-places-system options, in the right upper corner you will find a small speaker icon-> right click with the mouse-> open volume control-> preferences-> select all options specially those like headset- capture-capture1-capture2- input source- etc. those are not working !!!!

-now in the volume control ->label “options”-> change default options for “Mic” and “Digital Mic1″.

-in the next label “recording”-> maximum volume for all the stuff.

    - The device should be “HDA alsa mixer”

-finally confirm in ->system-> preferences-> sound preferences, that the sound capture is set to “HDA analog (ALSA)” similar to the previous point.

Now you can try to record something with the ’sound recorder program’
    it should work.

And the best Skype should work, no shity messages no shity problems (although when I use the inbuild mic instead of my headset the sound is so so).

I hope my suggestions are useful.

    best of luck,

    bye.

This is a half-assed work around for this problem. Removing pulseaudio just invites a plethora of additional problems down the line. Face it, Ubuntu is fully endorsing and implementing Pulseaudio into all it’s distributions now and into the future. I had the same exact issue you did; all I did was follow the instructions on numerous forums for properly setting up Pulseaudio on -buntu systems. Focus on how to make what you have work, not on removing system-wide default services to make ONE solitary program work in your DE; it’s common sense.

I removed pulseaudio, but didn’t add esound. Seems to work just fine. I have esound-clients, esound-common and pulseaudio-esound-compat installed, which flow from alsa recommendations, but the playback is actually handled by alsa not esound.

you can try this, I found it from skype forum and my computer is working now.

Went into Options Menu -> Sound devices

    Changed to the following
    Sound In: HDA Intel (hw:intel,0)
    Sound Out: Pulse
    Ringer: Pulse

    Now it works!

Once again. IT IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE audio recording settings Volume controle. It changes automatically so be careful. It jumps up and down by it self. A deamon indeed :)

Maby it is a conflict between HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) Analog device.

Good luck check it out and you will find out.

    hi
If you make a fix for Skype, pls make sure to check the other
media sw such as movie and audio players.
I have a feeling that some of the fixes may tell skype to use particular audio drivers but the “fix” may break other media sw.
    -thanks

Thanks a lot! I’ve done this operation already twice. First time for my ubuntu 8.10 version (and I was really really happy about that, because it worked!!!) and now I’ve installed ubuntu 9.04 and had to manage the same problem. Fortunately I’ve bookmarked this site (don’t know why (intuition?)), so now I’ve done the same thing for the second time and my skype works again, although the last (4th) command doesn’t work. But I’ve made the first three steps and it was enough to solve my skype audio playback problem.

So, THANKS a lot, really great stuff!!!

Hmmm, this actually at first made things worse on 8.04 - somehow caused even my gnome-terminal to hang :-O

Anyways, I removed esound and reinstalled paulseaudio and was delightfully horrified (after already battling with it so much earlier) to see that skype finally decided to list all my devices.

My usb webcam microphone is now working perfectly - cheers
