Solved! Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Shutdown Problem
Sponsored Links
Last week, I tried to upgrading my Ubuntu Hardy Heron into Intrepid Ibex, latest release of Ubuntu. After all upgrade process complete, I check all applications which I often use, I don’t want to have trouble with those apps, since they like my private secretary for my jobs.
Thanks god, it seems my Intrepid Ibex runs well, then I tried to shutdown and the problems finally I appear. I can’t turn off my PC, this must be quiet annoying. After browsing in Ubuntu forums and other sites, I finally have a solution for this problem.
The solution is so simple, just turn off your network connection before you turn off your PC. The icon is in right corner of your screen, right click and unbox “Enable Networking” option. Then you should make your PC sleep now. Of course this is only temporary solution, we hope Ubuntu team can quickly solved this bugs, so all Ubuntu user can shutdown, restart or hibernate their PC normally. How about you? Do you have another experience with Intrepid Ibex?

My Solution is even simpler, simply right click in the tool panel, and then click on “add to panel..” in the search bar look for “shut down..” simply add this button to your panel. When you need to shut down your PC, click on it, as simple as that!

Hi Angel Mass,
Thanks for the suggestion, too bad currently I already switch to Hardy Heron again. Intrepid Ibex is too slow for my machine.

hey i have a question, why can’t I put my computer a sleep mode? I have Intrepid installed on a deskop pc and I don’t have the suspend option in the menu thing. I just want to have my computer on, then be able to put it to sleep and wake it by moving my mouse or something, just like people do in Windows. Is there anything I could do?

You may want to check out the bug report at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/274734
In my case the problem was that the zd1211rw kernel module wasn’t playing nice with the 2.6.27-11-generic kernel. The bug report contains a script attachment to automatically disable network manager, remove the module, and then reinsert the module and re-enable network manager. You guys should all check it out and update the bug report (whether the fix works or not for you) so this is fixed in future updates.

I had a strange halt in my shutdown (after reinstalling). I assumed my system was hunting for something that was no longer available, maybe from an old script, and had trouble booting because the GRUB selected the newer Kernel still listed and exisiting on disk, but for a system reinstalled and not yet upgraded….
Solution? Switch to TTy2, then do ’sudo shutdown -P now’ (-P means power down) - it worked, and then worked fine from desktop forever after.
Nice.
