Amazing! We can now exploring the ocean using Google Earth 5.0. You can download the Google Earth 5.0 for Linux package from here. Currently, I already have Google Earth 4.3 installed on my Ubuntu. After download process finished, then run this command on your Terminal:
chmod +x /home/path-to-your-google-earth-5-file
still in the same folder, start installing by typing:
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
You should now see your Google Earth 5.0 right into your desktop. Your Google Earth 5.0 was located in Applications \\ Internet \\ Google Earth. And here is my screenshot:

For more experience, you can browse for Google Earth KML (Keyhole Markup Language) Greatest Hits. These are some examples:

I followed your directions and I get a blank black box when I open the Google Earth, and this message in my terminal:
Warning: Unable to create prefs directory ‘/home/foldername/.googleearth’. File exists.
I’m sure you know what’s going on here, but I don’t. Any ideas? I successfully downloaded Google Earth 4.2, but my update to 4.3 didn work either. I tried uninstalling them, but that also crashed. It seems weird that this should be so difficult!

Hi Jen, it seems you have problem with “libcrypto”, try refer to this post to fix your problem:

I tried this solution, and that didn’t work either. My original error message was as I posted, without mention of libcrypto.0.9.8 as that other poster received.
Thanks anyway, I’m sure I’ll get it working at some point!

@Jen
Check the permissions on the .googleearth file. Or try deleting it and reinstall the new google-earth after that.

Open ur terminal and type:
$cd Desktop
Then type:

It’ll uncompress and display the install wizard…

When I load google earth (Arch Linux, 64 bit, fully updated nvidia drivers), I get the menus, etc but the viewing area is completely black. If I type an address in (or select something from the tour), you can see the context boxes float around, but i can’t even see the outline of the earth or anything.
It used to work (a few months ago), so it could be the new drivers.
