Intrepid Ibex vs Hardy Heron
Sponsored Links

Weird! Look at these 2 screenshots. The first one is my Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex system monitor screenshot and the second one is my Hardy Heron system monitor screenshot. Take a look at the RAM usage (Memory and Swap Usage). It looks like Hardy Heron sucking much more memory resource compared than Intrepid Ibex, but in the actual condition, Hardy Heron is so much faster than Intrepid.
First, I think this is a bug then I should wait for updates, a month later, the slow performance still there. So, several days ago I decided to downgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Maybe I should wait for Ubuntu 9.04 with release codename Jaunty Jackalope. Any comment or suggestion?

I had the same problem. Intrepid Ibex was soo slow that I was not able to scroll a single web page … And I don’t have an old computer and my super PC should outperform. With Hardy, no more problems ,,,

Well, here at the School District we are using 8.10 and they seem to perform far better than 8.04 and most of our computers are around 600-900 MHz with 392MB-1GB of RAM and they are all running Ubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu.

I had Intrepid for 3 months. By then, I was sick of of the fact that the devs still hadn’t fixed the Bluetooth problem and I went back to Hardy. I haven’t had any significant problems after I switched.

I too went back to Hardy for stability and the fact that it is LTS. Also, I use static IP, with which Intrepid has several problems. Hardy? No bigee there.

Downgraded both my desktop and laptop (eeepc 701) to hardy from intrepid/jaunty.
I would love to use the new features such as tabbed nautilus, etc. , but I need a FAST AND STABLE system, not just one (or neither.)
But honestly, any Ubuntu is better than no Ubuntu.

I feel the same..
First, I think it’s because my b0x that’s to0 weak. But with the same machine, hardy runs m0re faster, especially the graphic card (maybe, because the driver..)
Actually, I’m n0t satisfied with this version of ubuntu..

IMHO the gnome system monitor is not very reliable, you could try “free -m” in the terminal (or “top” / “htop” for more details if you have istalled them).
According to “free -m” I have 3042 MB RAM in total, 873 MB are used BUT 477 MB of them are cached, so the actual usage is 873-477=396 MB. For a live CD session this values are fine, I think.
I like Hardy a lot!

@buggy,
I already tried using free -m command on console, and it seems perfectly the same with what shown on Gnome System Monitor. Anyway, thanks…

can anyone elaborate on how to downgrade without doing a wipe?
