Support World Silent Day Campaign
In my previous post, I discuss about Earth Hour Campaign which is held every March, 29th. Now we will discuss another “green campaign” called World Silent Day. Actually, I don’t quite sure when is the exact time for this campaign, since this afternoon I get an IM from one of my friends, he told me that tomorrow, starting from 10:00 - 14:00 (Indonesian Local Time), is the World Silent Day moment. On that hour, we had shut down all of our electronics gadgets, give “the earth time to breath”, my friend said.
Then I checked World Silent Day websites, and try to find some information about exact time for the World Silent Day campaign. Poorly, I can’t find it! On that site said that World Silent Day was already held on March 21, 2008.
I almost delete this article since there is no accurate information about this campaign (I try to contact my friends who told about tomorrow campaign, still there is no answer till now). But then I rethink and decide to give a go to this article. According to my interpretation, this campaign was held on March 21, 2008, which means already did before. And then what is World Silent Day? On “about” page, they describe as below:
SILENT DAY FOR THE EARTH
SOLVING CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH TRADITIONAL
WISDOM
We, members of community from various sectors, support sustainable development and the philosophy of harmony with nature;
We realize that threat of global warming that leads to climate change with potential devastating impacts on humans, and even predicted to create 200 millions climate refugees;
We are confident that the Indonesian Archipelago (Nusantara) heritage of wisdom, which deems the earth, water and air with the Earth’s inhabitants as sacred, is a national and world resource to combat climate change;
We see that one of the Nusantara heritage of wisdom is Trihitakarana philosophy from Bali that governs a harmonious relationship of human being with God, human being with another human being, and human being with nature – this can be a basis for sustainable development; and one of the practical implementations of Trihitakarana is the Nyepi or Silent Day conducted for 24 hours in Bali;
We estimate that during Nyepi, the CO2 emission reduction in Bali is at the minimum of 20 thousands tons because motor cycles, cars and airplanes cease to operate;
We hope that United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2007 will formulate the Bali Roadmap towards green house gas emission reduction post 2012;
We launch the “Bhisama Bali” (Bali Declaration) on Nyepi (Silent) Day for the Earth, with a call:
- For the delegates to UN Climate Change Conference agree on a Bali Roadmap that emphasizes climate justice; effectively implements the commitments of developed countries to reduce green house gas emission and to change the production and consumption pattern to be more climate friendly all over the world;
- For humanity to learn from Bali by determining March 21st as Nyepi Day, in which everyone can contribute to green house gas emission reduction by stopping all activities and energy consumption for one day. This is a fair and easy way. March 21st is also symbolic of the World Water Day. We propose that the UN through UNFCCC establish the Nyepi Day gradually beginning in March 2008 and with implementation by March 2010.
Bali can do it, why can’t the world?

1. Bhisama means a Sacred Guide that potentially brings disaster if not followed (Bhisa = something scared that potentially brings disaster; ma = guidance or advice)
2. March 21st is suggested because it is the Spring Equinox; the time when the sun moves from the equator towards the north, and spring is also a symbol for the beginning of a new life.
BALI COMMUNITY on CLIMATE CHANGE
BCCC is members of community from various sectors in Bali to a call for World Silent Day.
The World Silent Day is to encourage people of the world to stop (minimize) activity and energy consumption for one day to let the Earth rests.
This website is dedicated to the campaign of World Silent Day where people can have
information, share it with other people, submit the idea to develop World Silent Day and
vote for World Silent Day.
Well, poor me, this is the second times I missed the “stop global warming campaign” days. Although I missed this events, I hope through this post, I can create a “buzz” to internet, and help spreading this campaign throughout the world.
