Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS Reviews - Hardy Isn’t Hard!

Finally, after upgrading from 7.04 then 7.10 and 8.04, currently I can feel the brand new taste of Ubuntu 8.04 code name Hardy Heron. Ok, let’s summarize all of that experience. First, upgrade process done completely without error, I had little problem with Indonesian local repositories (Telkom), but then I changed to US server and upgrade process continued. All of my hardware also well detected (including Nvidia 6100 onboard video card), as it did on Feisty Fawn. Actually, my sound quality looks improved now, its like more “stereo” compared than on Feisty Fawn.

From the standard looks and feel, Hardy Heron almost no different with previous Ubuntu version. For the applications, I like Mozilla Firefox 3 beta 5 which is faster and lighter compared to Firefox 2.x, unfortunately some of my addons currently didn’t supported on Firefox 3, but it’s ok, I’m sure it will supported sooner or later. On Hardy, I also try installing Compiz and AWN (Avant Window Manager) which will make your Ubuntu bos looks like Mac. The problem came when everytime I start Compiz, the window decoration (metacity) missing. But, I can handle it by reading some references from Ubuntuforums.Org.

The only problem I had with Hardy Heron is everytime I want to log out or shutdown or hibernate, Hardy became freezed. But this also can be solved by activating Gnome Power Manager in System - Preferences - Session - Power Manager. So far, I quite happy with Hardy Heron, almost no pain at all, and the important thing is I can taste a lot of brand new application like Ooo 2.4, Supertuxkart, OpenTTD, Amarok, and many other fresh software.

Ok, I already proved to you that upgrading Ubuntu from 7.04 to 7.10 then 8.04 is very easy, what you need is adequate internet connection, cause the upgrade needs to download like 1 GB. It’s your turn now!

Upgrading Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn to 8.04 Hardy Heron

For your information, currently I’m using Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Wanna try to upgrade my machine to the latest Ubuntu version 8.04 a.k.a Hardy Heron which already launched several days ago. Poor me, I don’t separate my /home directory into separated partition, so I have upgraded my machine sequentially from 7.04 to 7.10 then 8.04 using update manager which is already provided in Ubuntu.

Now, the process still running, I’m not sure whether this method will upgrade my machine successfully. Usually, I separate my /home into different partition, so if I want to upgrade, simply download the latest ISO then reinstall whole new package in my existing Ubuntu partition. However, this method was recommended by official Ubuntu sites, so it’s worth to try though.

Later, I will share about the results… Happy upgrading

Note:

  1. In the future, if you want to install linux in your machine, I strongly suggest you separated /home directory into different partition. This will makes easier for you when managing upgrade process or backup your data.
  2. Want to download Ubuntu 8.04 but don’t have adequate bandwidth? Request free CDs from ShipIt
  3. You can download Ubuntu 8.04 ISO here. Simple tips, in order to speed up your download process, try to choose the nearest Ubuntu mirror from your current location.
